more info – kick in the head

composition - “kick in the head” was born much quicker than my previous 2 CDs…
i wrote the songs in a space of 3 years. most of them were written in NY
and some were written in barcelona and london.

with this new collection of songs i wanted to bring out a more positive & simple me… embrace the little things in life that make it so big… smile and enjoy the act of smiling… so i had a great time writing this CD… it was truly fun!! songs like “happy”, “be me”, “ice cream on sun kissed lips unloved” and “simply simple” were extremely fast and joyful to write… other songs were slightly harder to bring to life like for example the saddest song on the album: “abstract concept”
i really wanted to experiment with my lyrics and try telling stories for a change… “simply simple”, “take a picture” and “blank piece of paper” are the results of that little experiment and i must say i really enjoyed it!!

production - was a path of roses! easy, inspiring and a lot of fun… i wanted to work with a european team this time… wanted to keep the arrangements simple and straight to the point and make sure everything sounded crisp and beautiful… the whole time our motto was “less is more”
i think europe’s been in a very good place musically for a while now, producing some very interesting, beautiful and simplistic work… so that’s were my instincts told me to go record my new album… i was after a very direct and personal sound. i ended up working with producer valenti adell, who had produced my single “rebel rebel” released on “sunbeam surrounded by winter” in 2007

mixing - initially the plan was to have the album mixed in europe but that ended up being a difficult task….. so that’s when producer chris badami came on board. he and i immediately kicked it off. chris brought shine and beauty to the album with his talent and powerful bright sound… it was an incredible fun experience to watch chris work on the mixes! he was a blessing!!

design - i designed everything myself! the booklet and cover and website… i spent a lot of time enjoying myself doing that… i put together a very personal notebook with lots of cut offs and photos and handwriting and drawings… i wanted this album to be a personal experience both musically and visually. all the beautiful photos where taken by the fabulous and talented photographer ron haviv.
